Toru Furuya appearances
Toru Furuya's homepage mentions that on August 8th, he'll be appearing at the Akihabara Oriental Comic Theater as part of a Gundam talk show event. Though details aren't decided, it seems an easy guess that this will be tied into the theater's 25th anniversary Gundam film screenings.
He'll also be appearing at the International Character&Hobby Collection (the combo Hobby Expo + C3 event) at the Kadokawa booth on either August 21st or 22nd.
Not that this is really news...
This doesn't give any insight into the SEED Destiny thing but another domain search shows that gundam-seed-destiny.com is also registered by a rather famous individual. I guess Mr. Yamato didn't receive enough royalties from Sunrise?

Kenichi Matsumura interview
The August issue of Gundam Ace contained a Zeta movie staff interview with Kenichi Matsumura. In the past, he has worked on series like King of Braves GaoGaiGar Final as assistant producer, and Argento Soma and Witch Hunter Robin as a producer. He is currently working on the Zeta movie as a producer.
Q: The previously rumored Zeta movie is finally underway. Did this year being the 25th anniversary have anything to do with it?
Matsumura : This year being the 25th anniversary wasn't the only reason behind it. Last year, Mr. Tomino's TV series (Overman King Gainer) finally ended and the biggest reason was Mr. Tomino's feelings towards Zeta.
Q: For this movie production, did Director Tomino demand anything from the staff?
Matsumura: Instead of demands, he told us to be prepared. Since we are reorganizing a 20-year-old-series and adding new scenes, he told us, "Don't let this being 20-years-old imprison you." Besides making this movie fit with the 20-year-old Zeta, we were told to create this like a movie of today. As for the staff, it's mostly centered around people I know.
Q: Regarding the staff, you didn't organize the people who worked on the series for the movie?
Matsumura: I started off by hiring people I worked with in the past. Therefore, a lot of them don't have any experience with Zeta Gundam. We do have staff members like Naoyuki Onda and Morifumi Naka, who have worked on the TV series. We also have other former TV production members like Shigeaki Saegusa for music and Sadayoshi Fujino as the sound director. The new Zeta Gundam has a good balance of old and new staff.
Q: The main focus of the movie will be about the new scenes. How much of Part 1 "Inheritor of Stars" will be new scenes? Overall, how much air time does that translate to?
Matsumura: Part 1 will be about 90 minutes long and things will develop in a very good tempo. The new scenes will be about 1/3 of the movie. Director Tomino is personally re-editing the TV series footage using computer editing software. Usually the whole scale is decided during continuity, then the rest is "rush and cutting". However this time, the director would make a compilation of the footage, then feedback it to the continuity where overall scale and changes will take place. Finally, we would decide on what new scenes are needed.
Q: There are differences in the quality and animation today compared to 20 years ago. Is the staff having any difficulties with the new scenes?
Matsumura: In terms of animation, there was a lot of doubt. Today's art styles are different. Besides the difference in quality, you can experience a major gap in the drawing's feeling. In the beginning, there was a lot of doubt about how to draw them so it can be added on. As the production went on, the director's advice and each animator's strong tenacity resulted in the quality of the animation settling. The new scenes try to reflect the TV series' style while maintaining the movie's high quality. If you tried to follow the picture's change, you can probably tell which is new or old. We tried to make it unnoticeable if you followed the story. Necessary new scenes were added depending on how the story unfolded. As for the old animation, adjusting it from the TV format to widescreen was more than just cutting the top and bottom parts out. Lots of time was spent reflecting the anime direction design, fine tuning each cut, and making images clearer. I hope they will notice those parts as well.
Q: Finally, do you have a message for the anticipating fans?
Matsumura: This is a new Zeta Gundam with several original movie scenes and new BGM featuring Dolby Digital 5.1ch added. Of course, the characters and episodes will share common ground with the TV series, but it should distinguish itself as a movie. Please look forward to its completion.

Largest Gundam specialty shop to open in Osaka UPDATED
The other day, various Japanese news sites reported the impending opening of "Gundam's", which will be Japan's largest speciality shop devoted to Gundam goods. Joshin Denki, a large electronics retailer, announced that Gundam's will be in an approximately 330 sq. meter area that will open on July 10th in Nipponbashi, Osaka. The front of the building will be adorned with an 18-meter tall, full-body rendition of a Gundam (that's full size) and the side will have the upper body of Zaku II with a billboard. The first floor will have things like DVD's and game software while the second floor will be devoted to plamo. Business hours will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Joshin Denki estimates that the proceeds for the current fiscal year will be about 300 million yen.
EDIT: Thanks to Pam's Homepage for making this a bit clearer to me: the store exists but is quadrupling its floor space and adding the Gundam and Zaku II for a re-opening.
And the title of the SEED sequel is...?
Thanks to the detective work of darkhunger, it'd seem that the SEED sequel has a name: Gundam SEED Destiny. While this isn't the same as an official announcement, I'll note that this is pretty much exactly how the title of Gundam SEED was originally confirmed as well.

Tomino x Fukui interview
The current issue of Gundam Ace contained a 9-page long interview with Yoshiyuki Tomino by writer Harutoshi Fukui as part of the Zeta Gundam Movie announcement. However, only 2 pages involved Gundam directly. The rest was centered around current world politics (Iraq War, nationalism, and 9/11). Below is the portion of the interview which did relate to Gundam. Some spoilers for the Zeta TV series are present.
The link between the Zeta Gundam movie version and the current world.
Fukui: Changing our topic to the movie version of Zeta. Did any of these (current world) issues we touched on serve as a hint for this Zeta?
Tomino: Yes. It relates to what I was thinking after they offered for me to do a movie version of Zeta.
During the TV version, I was reluctant since I felt like "I have to do another Gundam." I wanted to make 2-3 more hits after Mobile Suit Gundam, but wasn't able to because of a lack of strength. I was disappointed to feel "Is this all I have?" and also because of problems within the production environment, a relationship difficulty with Nippon Sunrise (now Sunrise). TV anime business people can only think about making shows that make money. It's not a bad thing, but I was shameful about settling into that. In that shamefulness, I decided to do what I wanted to do with Zeta by using the "Gundam" name. In other words, implementing a message, "You become dumber by watching anime all the time", into your series. It's dangerous to apply things from anime into the real world. So to slip that message in, you have to do it through the main character and maybe people will understand. The end result was that Kamille goes crazy.
Encouraging the TV anime generation to part with TV anime, in other words creating an antithesis against TV anime within a TV anime, that's what I did. The memory of just creating Zeta one way or another left a bad impression on me. However, 20 years later, I now like TV anime because of Zeta. To me, that's my stupid side coming out.
Kamille became crazy because I wanted to leave a message, but some people thought "TV anime is a medium in which you can do these kind of things." They're right about it, too. There are lots of works of art where the main character goes crazy in the story.
F: I agree.
T: Nothing you can do about it when they say that. I understand that's how a work (series) is seen. 6-7 years ago, I had an offer to do a Zeta movie. Of course, it disappeared while I was reluctant to reply. This time, I decided to accept the offer because 9/11 happened. The other reason was personally myself. After doing Turn A and Overman King Gainer, I thought now is a good time to do Zeta.
The movie version will be compiled into 3 parts. Once I started on it, I worked on the content of the first movie then edited it together with the DVD footage. I said, "Wow, this is great!" I have not decided how it will end ultimately yet.
F: It won't follow the TV version?
T: I decided this much after the first one: The ending is going to be (Note: a bit of a spoiler for the end of the movies here) the reverse of the TV version. Kamille's ending will be happy. If I decide to release something that's a counter against society, there will be some who misunderstand it. If I said this anime is just entertainment, I feel a lot better.
If I do it this way, TV anime or even robot anime won't create any misunderstandings. This is why the movie version of Zeta will have a 'vigorous' Kamille. I have no doubt about this. I came to this conclusion while working on the first part. In fact, I completed the first part with Kamille becoming envigored. This is Kamille's story. I used that as the foundation for the movie. This resulted with it being enjoyable and great. I was surprised. As I let go of my stress, I became relieved. What a rush. This is how entertainment should be. It gives hope. I don't want to see a story where there's no tomorrow.
Which finally brings us to the connection with Iraq. Muhammad started Islam and rejected worshipping idols. I was able to understand why he did this. He's saying to end dangerous lifestyles where you can't tell the difference between living in reality or playing around. This is why Muhammad outlawed this. By creating an idol, each tribe makes their own god, which leads to killing each other.
How does this story tie in with Zeta? You have idols like Kamille, Char, and Amuro. Now those idols are joined together. In terms of film theory, this would be a grand format. It looks like I can make a story where a group exists in which everyone in this world gets together doing something.
F: That part deals with the nationalism we discussed.
T: Yes, exactly. The most important point when I made Zeta was that the characters who appeared in Mobile Suit Gundam had aged. Who in this anime business world would do such a bothersome thing? I did that in Zeta. People such as "10 years ago, I was fighting as Char. Now I have become older." appeared and you had young people saying, "Amuro-san was a hero." (Note: Tomino's describing characters who grew up inbetween the two series by using general dialogue they spouted in the show rather than simply stating their names. In this case, Char and Katz.)
F: Everyone believes this is what makes Zeta enjoyable.
T: Wonderful. Lots of characters appeared in the TV version, which was tiresome back then. Now it becomes a weapon. No one was more surprised than myself. Initially, I had planned to eliminate some semi-regulars to summarize it, but no one got left out. Having everyone there results with good organization.
F: Like there are many countries and ethnics, accepting each as individuals.
T: It's useless for me to be saying selfish things in order to reconcile it. It's ok for everyone to be there and it looks like it'll be that way.
F: This is similar to seeing things from another point of view.
T: I'm planning to slowly unfold the story. Perhaps one or two might go away. For that I hope they forgive me, but fundamentally I can't leave anyone out.
F: The last part of the TV series, characters died left and right...
T: They are going to die. I didn't leave out any important episodes. People are going to die because they were there. If they weren't there, they can't die.
F: Better that they're there than not.
T: They have to be there. If they were left out originally, they can't even die. But everyone is there. Even though I hold the authority as the original author, I can't leave them out. In those terms, this is a superb story.

HLJ Shizuoka Hobby Show videos
HobbyLink Japan is posting video footage from this year's Shizuoka Hobby Show. Nothing anime-related up yet but more updates are in the works.
SD Gundam Force season 2 broadcast info
Monocle on Gundam Watch's forums posted a press release from Bandai regarding SDGF. One portion says:
"Come this July, season 2 of SD Gundam Force will debut on Cartoon Network and Bandai America will unveil its new collection of toys. Snap together action figures, collectible miniatures, 5” figures, vehicles and playsets will all be available based on characters from the new season."
So, even assuming that it premieres after the Japanese broadcast of season 2 begins the same month, a likely weekday slot for the new season on CN would obviously outpace the weekly Japan eps pretty quickly. Good news for fans here after all.
Alternate Universe Gundam closes
As mentioned by The Word: Finder, Professor Daravon's fine Alternate Universe Gundam resource site has shutdown.
Official SEEDage
The official SEED MSV site updated with a few new MS: the M1A Astray and, making the transition from Hobby Japan contest winner to MSV canon, the Lightning pack.
And, for anyone still holding out on officially official confirmation about the 2nd and 3rd SEED Special Editions, Sunrise's site finally made mention of the DVD releases. Details (titles, release dates, choice of two types of boxes with the final SE, price) match earlier reports. It's mentioned that "Dawn Becomes Distant" will be broadcast sometime in the Summer.
Zeta Movie scans from Newtype
The July issue of Newtype contained a total of 5 screen shots from the Zeta movie. 3 of them were already shown in Studio Voice magazine earlier.
Quick summary of the Newtype article:
The movie will be in the widescreen format.
It will focus on Kamille's growth where you will see less of him rebelling against adults, being more optimistic, and generally being a good boy. Additional footage of his daily life will be included.
Rest of the article focused on the "Aging Effect", which was previously covered in Hobby Japan and Gundam Ace.

It was announced today that a Harutoshi Fukui book, "Boukoku No Aegis" (Eng. title "Aimless Aegis", though the name is more literally "Aegis Of A Ruined Country"), is being turned into a movie. The story is about an Aegis warship with bio-chemical weapons on board that becomes occupied by terrorists and the two members of the crew who have to fight them. Bit more SDGF
Something sure to make ship design fans cringe in horror: the Battleship Gundamusai. Thanks to Hellcat Gundam over at Toonzone for checking HLJ more often than I do.
Bit more MS IGLOO

Bandai A-Kon news
News from Animeondvd.com regarding Bandai's panel at this weekend's A-Kon: Zeta Gundam is coming this September, which gels with an old report from February .
Also, they seem to have confirmed that they have the license for Overman King Gainer. News like this deserves a Super Flaming Tomino Head as well as a Monkey Tomino.
Finally, they mentioned that some later volumes of Gundam SEED will have Limited Editions as well.
